Volunteers add to the atmosphere
Volunteers make a significant contribution to the happy atmosphere at the Supported Housing Unit, comments project leader Peter Lyndon.
‘The staff are wonderful, of course,’ he says, ‘but they are greatly assisted by some magnificent volunteers, who come into the house and befriend the residents. Even if all they do is watch telly together, that simple act makes a difference to people who have found it hard to make friends or develop trust. And the rewards for the volunteers are incalculable as they see residents’ lives change.’
Volunteers share in the efficient running of the house, helping with food shopping as well as supervising residents in preparing and clearing away the meals, hanging out afterwards and sharing skills. Some volunteers provide specific training for residents with, for example, physical exercise and recreation, while others help with gardening or admin tasks. But most important is the way they build relationships with the residents, sharing life skills.
roject manager Rob Liddiard explains: ‘We ask volunteers to give us three months commitment at first, to see what they have to offer. After that, we discuss together the longer-term prospects. On our current ‘wish-list’ is a guitar player – someone who could help make music or even teach residents to play a little. We could also do with someone to take on some of the office duties which don’t really need a full-time staff member – things like inductions and communicating policies and procedures.’
